No, kava bars typically do not serve alcohol. Are Kava Bars Legal

Where is Kava Banned

In the early 2000s, several European countries, including Germany, temporarily banned kava due to reports of potential liver damage. However, these bans were later lifted after multiple investigations could not conclusively link kava consumption to liver damage. Although bans were reversed, some European countries still have strict regulations on kava. Different countries have varying legal frameworks and restrictions, so it's crucial to stay informed about regulations in your area.

I go a lot deeper into what actually happened in Germany in our kava scare post. You would not believe what actually happened there and it makes sense why Germany's regulatory agency has been trying to push all the information regarding these actions under the rug. Just a hint, it was less a valid scientific finding and more a seemingly malicious regulatory nightmare, and it took years of delayed court battles before Germany's own legal system could overturn the ban, admitting the science behind the whole ban never held up.

What to know before your first visit

I still remember walking into my first kava bar with basically no idea what I was doing, half expecting it to feel like ordering at a regular bar. When you are going into a new experience like this, you do not know what to expect and you can easily get into your head making everything seem overwhelming until you understand what's going on. Here's roughly what I wish someone had told me before I sat down.

1. Get in the right mindset It's easy to go in with anxiety to a completely new experience. Before you walk in, situp or stand up straight, close your eyes, take a big diaphragmatic breath by expanding the bottom of your stomach on inhale, hold it for about 10 seconds, then blow it out like you're blowing out a candle. Repeat a few times. Then set the intention that you are an amazing spiritual being, and that you are open to new and unique experiences.
2. Start small. Ask for a regular shell. Strength swings a lot by cultivar and how each kava bar prepares their drinks. It's a good idea to test out whatever's currently brewing or first trying out the house blend. Even though the bars we support typically have multiple single origin strains on the menu, we recommend to start off with the house blend. When you first try coffee you don't order the upside down caramel frappacino with extra whipped cream. You get a normal coffee and see what all the fuss is about, then move on from there. The same is with kava.
3. The taste is earthy, numbing, and a little peppery bite, not sweet. Some bars mix in mocktail-style blends if straight root isn't your thing, yet. Nothing wrong with easing in but we do recommend at least taste the traditional brew first. Expect it to be different, notice the uniqueness of the drink, and for goodness sake don't eat a huge meal before trying it out.
4. If you're getting it served in a shared tanoa kava bowl, drink it ceremonial style There's usually a rhythm to tanoa drinking and it's best to follow tradition. Whoeever ordered will probably pour you your first cup so take it with gratitude, make a silent prayer of thanks in your head, and one-shot it if you can. Every bar runs it a little differently, so just ask if you have questions. Nobody's going to think less of you for asking and generally the servers are excited to share with you what they know about the drink.
5. Give it time before you judge it. Kava builds slow, usually 15-30 minutes, nothing like the fast hit of alcohol. I've watched people write off their first cup way too early and overdoing it. If your personality is more cautious, take it slow.
6. Talk to whoever's behind the bar. Kava bartenders tend to be very knowledgeable, easy going, and can give you great information on the blend or strain. Ask them stupid questions. Use them to udnerstand what you're going to experience, that's what they're there for.
7. It's not a fast in-and-out drink. Kava bars are built for lingering, board games, conversation that runs long. Settle in and people watch. Notice the similarities and differences between this establishment and what you usually visit. Take it all in and enjoy the experience.

Is the kava at a kava bar actually safe? Noble vs. Tudei

Safety at a kava bar comes down to one thing more than anything else: which cultivar they're actually serving. Kava plants fall into two broad camps.

Noble kava is the traditional, well-studied stuff Pacific Islanders have been drinking ceremonially and socially for generations. This is what a reputable kava bar pours, and it's got a long track record as a beverage used by tribes for thousands of years.

Tudei kava ("two-day," and yes it's named for exactly what you'd guess) is a harsher, lower-quality at times cultivar that is not meant for regular drinking, and often produces a hangover symptom that can last up to 2 days. I've personally never been to a kava bar who served these styles but shady owners who are looking to maximize profits can sometimes sneak it in. Just be aware.

A good bar will know exactly which cultivar their root is hailing from, batch date, chemotype, and maybe kavalactone percent (active). If you ask and nobody can answer, that may tell you something about the place.

Kava bars, alcohol bars, and kratom bars are all trying to be the same kind of thing, a place to go be social. But what's actually in the cup is nothing alike. Here's how they stack up.
