6 General Guidelines to Consuming Kava Safely
"Kyle, Your blood work came back great. Cholesterol levels have dropped and you're in a very healthy range... BUT, your liver function test is a bit off. We're going to need you to...."
Crap...
While researching I made it a point to add liver tests to my quarterly blood panel. I'm going to assume you know Kava known as "Nature's Xanax" has been proven on multiple cases to be a potent natural anti-anxiety supplement, and you also know about its murky past with liver complications.
But kava has been used for thousands of years safely in the Pacific Islands. What the hell happened?
Here's 6 very important guidelines we uncovered to ensure you don't end up like me. The last is extremely important.
You'll probably be surprised why no one talks of these. I was too.
6 Ways to Consume Kava Safely
1. Look for Chemotype not Percentage - Percentages are easy to flaunt but Chemotype is key and any reputable vendor will happily tell you the kava chemotype and source. Chemotypes are important to the kava experience, more important than percentage, and if you're curious I go more in depth here ~> Tap Here
5. Drink on an Empty Stomach - Food muttles the effects of kava. This may trick you into drinking well over the recommended amount (which is about 300mg of kavalactones). I noticed when drinking kava after eating, I drank WAAAY more than 300mg to get the same buzz.
2. Get to Know Your Source's Source - You would be SHOCKED how many companies are sourcing from China. If a vendor sells extracts, you should be cautious. I spent months sourcing extracts and all roads kept crossing through China. it's scary. You can read more in depth on it here
3. Throw Out Kava Tinctures and Don't Mix - "Alcohol extraction" is actually a commercially used method they use to create kava extract tinctures. Researchers found this method brought out 168.5x MORE cytotoxins from a single gram of kava root.
4. Say "NO" to Micronized Kava - Micronized kava is kava root that is fine ground into a powder. You are literally eating the root and therefore consuming toxic conctituents that would be filtered out in traditional brewing (More on this specific later). And don't dare to mix alcohol with micronized, you're basically re-creating the same dangerous process they use to create tinctures in the lab.
6. Steer Clear of Kava Extracts - This refers to kava in pill, capsule, tincture, and concentrates. These are non-traditional extractions developed in a lab and have been shown to create VERY HIGH levels of cytotoxic chalconesin the extract powder/liquid, which are usually non-existent in traditionally made kava. Cytotoxic literally means it is toxic to liver cells. Still wondering why there were liver failures? All roads point to these.
